You know the double mic setup you have seen on every presidential podium since 1965? Those are SM57's with the A2WS windscreen. I've most often seen it used to mic instrument amplifiers both in live and studio setups but paired with a windscreen is a very capable vocal mic as well. It's also not as power hungry as the 7b, so depending on your interface you probably won't need a cloud lifter or similar. (~$100 new can be found used for $80 or less.) The internals are very similar to the 7b and with a windscreen ($20-40) and eq you can get a tone nearly indistinguishable between the two. Otherwise, Get a mic that is versatile, that way you'll get better outcomes if you want to branch out from just recording your voice. Whether it be packing blankets to hang on the walls, acoustic foam, diy panels etc, this one step will increase your recording quality immensely, even with a cheaper mic. Most would benefit much more from spending 100 bucks on sound treatment to mitigate room noise. Would you be able to do any sound treatment to help with the noise? Hot take: 90% of people using the sm7b right now are just flexing on camera and or following the trend. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this, especially anyone who has made the upgrade from a decent dynamic mic to SM7b. ![]() ![]() Unfortunately due to the COVID situation I'm not going to be able to try out the SM7b in a store for comparison. I think the SM7b is a bit more gain hungry than the Procaster so would need to factor in the potential need for a CloudLifter (or similar) if I'm pushing the dbx pre-amp too hard and getting noise. I'm using a dbx286s on each mic partly as a pre-amp, but mainly for the audio processing and especially the gate which helps me in a noisy environment. The Procaster rejects most of that, and I understand the SM7b would also cope well in this environment. Is the SM7b really so much better? I know it's hard to quantify these things, but would you make the upgrade? Is the SM7b overrated and "the" podcasting mic to have because of Joe Rogan? (Controversial, I know!) Maybe I'm just insecure about my setup since the SM7b seems like the mic to have.įor context and comparison, I'm recording in a really noisy environment, hence dynamic mics. I'm not on camera so the shock mount for the Rode mics is not a problem. So it feels like a lot of money for not that big of an improvement (law of diminishing returns). However I'm set up with Rode Procasters are very decent. It seems like many people consider the SM7b as the ultimate dynamic mic for podcasting/streaming. ![]()
